Primary 3! How are you?
Tomorrow, Thursday 21st May is the Feast of the Ascension. I thought I would add a Blog post about it in preparation for tomorrow. This Feast Day is a Holy Day of Obligation, and if we were in school, we would be celebrating Mass.
What is Ascension Day?
Jesus died on Good Friday. On Easter Sunday, He came back to life. This event is celebrated by Christians, but what happened afterwards?
For the following 40 days after Easter Sunday, Jesus kept appearing to his disciples and other followers. The 40th day was the last time he did this before he was taken up to Heaven. We call this 40th day Ascension Day as ‘ascension’ means rising to a higher level. This word actually takes its meaning from Christ’s ascent to Heaven.
Ascension Day is also known as the Feast of Ascension or Holy Thursday, as it always falls on this day of the week. On Jesus’ final meeting with His disciples He told them that He would always be with them, along with promising the gift of the Holy Spirit. 10 days later, they were indeed visited by the Holy Spirit, which is now known as Pentecost.
On Ascension Day, Christians celebrate the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven.
