Numicon guide for parents | Oxford Owl

This week we got brand new sets of Numicon, and on Friday morning we all enjoyed playing with it.

What is Numicon?

It’s a system of flat plastic shapes with holes in, with each shape representing a number from one to 10.  Each number has its own colour.  The aim of Numicon is to make numbers real for children through them being able to see and touch them.  It also has a multi-sensory approach that’s known to help learning.

Maisie – It’s fun.  I made a poster.

Ljay – It’s helps me count my numbers,  I liked the green ones.

Amelia – It makes you better at counting and adding.  You can put them together.

Evie – I made numbers with it.  I liked drawing round it.

David – It helps you with all the numbers.  It’s like a jigsaw.

Connor – I’m asking Santa for it.

Zoe – I added two numbers and wrote add sums.  You learn numbers with it.

We enjoyed writing letters to Santa!  We put them all in a big envelope, included the address and added Christmas stamps too.  We hope Santa enjoys reading them.

We did some Christmas craft and used colourful sequences, pens, foam stickers and pom poms to create Christmas trees.  We added them to our class Winter display.
