This week in Primary 1 we have been trying to subitise. This means we know how many dots are on a card without having to count. We have been learning to explain how we see the dots and the strategies we use to know how many there are.

Cody – I can see 5 dots

Eliie – I see 2 and 3 and that makes 5.

Rocco – I see it the same as Ellie, I see 2 dots at 1 side and 3 dots at the other.

Damon – I see there is 4 and 1 and that makes 5.

Jessica – I know that 2 and 2 makes 4 and then 1 more makes 5.

Jacob – I know there is 6 dots because there is 2 at the bottom and 4 at the top.

Jaxon – I just knew by looking at it that there was 6.

Karlie – I can see 2 and 2 and 2 and that makes 6.

Lowen – I know because there’s 4 at the top and 2 at the bottom.

We have been playing bingo to help us learn how to subitise.  Mrs Gaffney has ten frame flashcards with dots and we cross out the number as she holds up each card.

We are numeracy superstars.
