This week in P7 we started our whole class novel study as part of our WWII topic. We are reading Letters from the Lighthouse by Emma Carroll – an adventure/mystery story set during the Blitz that follows the lives of three siblings. We are doing lots of different activities about this including discussion, predicting, inferring, summarising and creating character profiles. It’s great to be studying this all together!
In numeracy we have been working on our percentages and will soon be moving onto ratio. Pupils have been learning how to divide percentages using the bar model method which visually interprets the data into units to help pupils ‘see’ the problem before they solve it. We have also been learning about money and exchanging money.
Some of our small group work this week has included creating information report posters for Lent and continuing on our WWII expressive arts project where we are creating families who will soon be moving into our 1940 ‘Kermit Gardens’ community in London, which will feature on on our classroom wall display. We have created each family member’s identity, job/role, pets and other information and are looking forward to welcoming the Browns, Ashleys, Smiths, Spears, Waltons and other families in the coming days. This Storyline approach will enable pupils to experience how families in a wartime street adapted to the changes and challenges of living during the war.
Finally we enjoyed World Book Day on Thursday! Perhaps it was also a secret chance practise and wearing our jammies for camp too! We enjoyed wearing our PJs and doing our scavenger hunt with our P1 buddies. Also we made some fantastic book character spoon people! Well done to Abbi, Kayla-Jayde and Linda who were voted the winners for their Papa Smurf, Shrek and Sully characters!
